History of the iconic red lipstick

Today, red lipstick is a symbol of femininity and confident woman that is not afraid to show herself. Chanel is one of the best known cosmetic brands that represents the red lipstick ideology but how and when this iconic “ accessory “ was created ?

Long before us, one of the most beautiful queens of Egyptian history, Nefertiti, really was the first-ever known who invented and used red lipstick. She was often called the Goddess of Beauty and Femininity. ( c. 1370 – c. 1330 BC )

Next in line is Cleopatra - another Egyptian Queen who has been known for her seductive approach to men, and she was a big fan of Makeup and red lipstick. 

Later, the red lipstick symbolised prostitution and witchcraft and has lost its charm for a few centuries. 

16th century: if you think of Geisha - what comes to mind immediately- red lips! Exactly, same time as Queen Elisabeth the 1st, women in Japan re-invented their lipstick. 

And then in 19th-century lipstick took off as the French beauty house @guerlain started to produce red lipstick. War nurses also used it. 

The 1950s was the highest peak time for a red lipstick with Elisabeth Taylor, Marilyn Monroe, Grace Kelly and others. That’s also the time Coco Chanel started to produce red lipstick.

Today, all the celebrities and almost every feminine woman loves red lipstick, and it’s a manifestation of beauty, confidence and elegance. 

Elisabeth Taylor once said: “ Pour yourself a drink, put on some lipstick and put yourself together! “.
